Sourcefabric run Prague Marathon for Cystic Fibrosis Club

Sourcefabric team members will be donning their running shoes and limbering up this weekend as we prepare to take part in the Prague Marathon on Sunday 8th May. Four of us will be attempting the relay, where four people run a section of the marathon each, and Newscoop team leader Holman "Ironman" Romero will be running the full distance. Our designated charity is the Cystic Fibrosis Club in the Czech Republic.

The Cystic Fibrosis Club was founded in 1992. It is the only non-profit organization in the Czech Republic which associates and helps people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The mission of the Club is to improve life quality of CF positive people and moreover to increase awareness  of the disease. The club provides social services and psychological support, it supports rehabilitation of sufferers and provides tools and equipment for specialzed workplaces and CF centres.

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive tract. It is one of the most common chronic lung diseases in children and young adults, and may result in early death. In the Czech Republic it occurs in one of every 2500 – 3000 children. Cystic Fibrosis is also followed by other diseases – diabetes, hepatic cirrhosis, osteoporosis and infertility in men. CF sufferers need everyday intensive treatment and the diease shortens their lives despite modern approaches in medicine.
