In 2005, a group of leading media and public figures initiated the M100 Colloquium in Potsdam, when the city was running for European Capital of Culture 2010. Since then, every year, this international forum brings together Europe’s top editors, commentators and media owners (print, broadcasting and internet) alongside key public figures to assess the role and impact of the media in international affairs and to promote democracy and freedom of expression and speech.

In 2016, the Colloquium will focus on initiating a constructive dialogue between all spheres of society about the prospects of a free and democratic Europe. The topic of the discussion is “War or Peace. The return of geopolitics, disintegration and the radicalisation of society in Europe”.

Following the Colloquium, the M100 Sanssouci Media Award will be conferred. The M100 Media Award honours personalities who, through their work have left their mark on Europe and in the world. The award reflects their service to the safeguarding of freedom of expression and the deepening of democracy as well as their outstanding achievements in promoting European understanding and communication.

This year laureate is Italian author and journalist Roberto Saviano. Since the publication of his book “Gomorrah”, the 36-year-old and his family have been threatened by the mafia. Now under police protection, Saviano lives an underground life, sharing the fate of an increasing number of journalists in Europe and worldwide who have been threatened, imprisoned, tortured or killed because of their work. The laudation will be presented by ZEIT Editor-in-Chief Giovanni di Lorenzo.

For the first time, the event will be covered live, with Live Blog. The very special reporters liveblogging from Potsdam will be the 25 participants of the M100 Young European Journalists workshop. The workshop is an initiative of the city of Potsdam and Potsdam Media International e.V. to support and empower young journalists. During five days, participants will hear the experience and be trained by journalists from the investigative networks CORRECT!V, Netzwerk Recherche, ICIJ and OCCRP.

At the Colloquium, the young journalists will setup an editorial team and blog live from the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium. Parts of the event will be also live streamed on Facebook. The event will be thus for the first time reaching out to a wider audience, all over Europe and the world.

“The M100 Sanssouci Colloquium is happy to collaborate with Sourcefabric to use Live Blog and cover the event live,” said Isabel Gahren, M100 YEJ Coordinator. “This is particularly interesting, it will give us the opportunity to train our 25 young journalist participants on how to report live, something we haven’t done before”.

“Live Blog seems to be an exciting and professional tool to do exactly that: to cover news live, for example events such as the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium,” continued Isabel. “We believe Live Blog is an excellent all-around coverage tool, especially thanks to the functionality of aggregating photos, tweets, links and embedding content from any other media. We are looking forward to seeing it live in action.”
