Our impact in 2015
When developing technology, we work shoulder to shoulder with our users. We develop tools with the aim of having a positive impact on the news industry as a whole.
Throughout 2015, we continued to bring our technology and media development expertise to news organisations in all corners of the world. We think there is no better way to tell the story of our year than with a collection of the successes of all the media organisations, human rights defenders, communities, cultural actors that use our technologies.
We are proud to present you our 2015 Annual Report.
Here are some of the highlights, some of the stories of our partners & users that highlight the impact our technology makes.
First and foremost we work to empower newsrooms worldwide. By partnering with national news agencies such as Australian Associated Press and Norsk Telegrambyrå, we are building Superdesk, our end-to-end news creation, production, curation, distribution, and publishing platform. Together, we are building the future of journalism.
Our mission is not only to support media in their commercial development. Last year, we provided the reporters of Nepali Times with the technology to deliver quality live coverage of the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that hit their country in April. Furthermore, our open source CMS, Newscoop, powered the distribution of access to multilingual quality information in post-war societies in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Sudans.
But it's not finished. Our impact went beyond journalism. For the second year in a row, we supported the work of human rights defenders by providing Amnesty International with Booktype, our collaborative publishing solution. With Booktype, Amnesty produced their Annual Report on the State of Human Rights, a cornerstone publication for human rights at global level.
During 2015, we also experimented with using our tool in larger development programmes. Thanks to Airtime, our radio in the cloud solution, we helped local activists in the South Caucasus to promote mutual understanding and peace in their communities. 25 new radio stations were created, involving more than 80 participants from 4 different countries.
“At the five-year mark of Sourcefabric’s history,” says our Managing Director Sava Tatić, “I believe that we have managed to plant the flag of open source technology at the heart of the news industry. It will be our job in the coming years to make it the default standard for journalism.”
We said it before: we believe that quality independent journalism has a fundamental role to play in any healthy society. There is still much work to be done. For now, we’re happy to share with you our 2015 journey. This is not an Annual Report. This is the story of 31 million & 536 thousand seconds of work, love and passion. From all of us.
