Journalism coders converge at SRCCON
Next week both myself and Petr Jašek, Sourcefabric Superdesk Developer, will be heading to the first ever SRCCON in Philadelphia, July 24-25. We're excited to meet with other newsroom innovators to share our experience and gain insight into other innovative development practices.
"SRCCON is a conference for developers, interactive designers, and other people who love to code in and near newsrooms." Over the course of two days we'll be looking to collaborate with some of journalism-code's best thinkers and makers. Check out the full list of sessions for details on all the topics and presenters who'll be there.
At Sourcefabric, we are not developing in the newsroom, but we develop for newsrooms. Even though we cooperate with newsrooms from different media organizations, we come from a different perspective. This will be a great opportunity to get to know the people who work right in the field of journalism and exchange ideas with them.
I am interested in learning more about newsroom publishing workflows and how newsroom dev teams work. Two talks that are of particular interest to me are, Before we can fix the product, we need to redesign the newsroom itself with Tom Meagher. The second, Opening your code for newsrooms to use, by Gabriela Rodrigues and Jeremy B. Merrill is right up our alley as well!
Hearing from organisation who work in different types of media will also be important. As the path of journalism continues to evolve and adapt to new online conditions, we're eager to take note of new trends and innovations that many of the attending media organisations are at the forefront of.
We will be liveblogging during the breaks using our very own Live Blog, so stay tuned for more information about that. And if you are attending the conference, you can look for us over by the coffee stand (which we are sponsoring). We'd love to chat with you about your ideas for the future of the newsroom. You can follow our activity from the conference at @HlmnRmr and @jasekpetr.
