Newscoop Localization World Cup kicks off!

The Newscoop open source content management system for media organisations has users around the world, many of them in countries where producing free and independent media is a challenge. Newscoop offers more than 20 localizations, enabling journalists and their editors to work in an environment which not only supports the language they are writing in, but also has a web interface in that language. A major release like the forthcoming Newscoop 4.3 brings many new features, and that means lots of new interface strings (single words or short phrases) to translate.

As fans get ready for the World Cup in Brazil, Sourcefabric would like to encourage (friendly) national rivalries in the community of our users and supporters. Our aim is that every localization will reach 100% completion by the time Newscoop 4.3 is released. The more fans each language team can gather, the more likely it is that we will hit that target. Here are the Top 20 scores on the leaderboard at the time of writing:

  1. Czech 99%
  2. German 96%
  3. Spanish 88%
  4. Polish 87%
  5. Greek 82%
  6. Italian 82%
  7. Georgian 80%
  8. Austrian 80%
  9. Russian 80%
  10. Arabic 79%
  11. Ukrainian 77%
  12. Hungarian 75%
  13. Serbian Cyrillic 73%
  14. Serbian Latin 71%
  15. Belarusian 68%
  16. Brazilian 64%
  17. Romanian 40%
  18. Dutch 38%
  19. Portuguese 32%
  20. Swedish 31%

Can you help your fellow countrymen and women by contributing or reviewing translation strings in Newscoop 4.3?

The task is now easier than it used to be, thanks to a collaborative online workflow, and any duplicate strings in Newscoop's plugins being translated automatically. Every string added or confirmed helps, and the Transifex platform makes it easy to contribute to your team's progress whenever you have a minute or two free.

You don't need any interest or ability in football to take part in Newscoop localization. If you don't have a Transifex account already, sign-up is free. Then all you have to do is go to the Newscoop page on Transifex and apply to join one of the language teams. You will be granted translator membership automatically. There, you will see the Newscoop core project and a number of plugins listed. Simply click on any link in this list, click on the number of untranslated strings, and you can begin — it's as easy as that.

If you don't understand the context of a string, leave a comment underneath it, and a member of the Newscoop team will help you. You can also refer to the Newscoop manual for journalists and editors if you aren't sure about a feature, or try it for yourself on the Newscoop demo site.

Please get in contact with Sourcefabric if you would like your Transifex account to be upgraded to reviewer status, or if you want to start a new localization that isn't listed there.

Newscoop 4.2.3 was released today and features Hungarian and Arabic translations
