Yemen's Women Power promotes leaders through Arabic and English website
Yemen's Women Power came from the idea to make the voice of Yemeni women heard in the decision making process in Yemen and through the transformation of the country to democracy. The project aims to increase the visibility of existing women leaders in Yemen and resulted from the low participation of women in decision making processes, mostly due to the systematic exclusion of women.
A team has been working together on Yemen's Women Power. This involves fieldwork so a number of researchers have been working on the project including a team leader, project coordinator and assistants. The project coordinator is in charge of following up with the site uploading, and monitoring in general.
We hope the website achieves the following:
- Reliable and relevant electronic database of existing women leaders of Yemen
- A freely accessible website of women leaders in both Arabic and English
- Makes Yemeni women leaders visible to all and easy to find
- Receives online applications for inclusion in the bi-lingual, electronic database
Yemen is going through a very unique situation today with both opposition and the former regime sharing power. One of the main reasons for the poor representation of women has affected the ability for women's voices to be heard. There is an inadequate visibility of the existing women leaders. Through this project we are interested in highlighting women who can effectively participate in developing and supporting the country.
Extensive background in women's leadership in Yemen
We have been involved in a number of like-minded projects. Yemen 21 Forum has worked to promote women's achievements. We also worked with the Women Political Empowerment Project, which aims at increasing women's ability to promote their political participation. There is also the project "60 women" that trained women from all over the country on political activities in campaigning, mass communication and dealing with media. Other activities like creating a network of political women through a facebook group and the handbook called LEAD for aspiring Yemeni women who want to become politicians has also helped.
Reaching Sourcefabric through Yemen Times
Yemen Times started working with Sourcefabric almost a year and a half ago. Their positive experience and reputation encouraged us to work with them. The Sourcefabric team has been very professional in their work. We found they provided really creative and satisfactory solutions. They had a very detailed process to prepare the website before its final launch. Their professionalism was also reflected in the attractive design and clear and easy user interface that offers bilingual language capability and building the database of women leaders.
- We released Newscoop 4.2 this week with backend localizations and a translated manual in Arabic and Georgian.
