Sourcefabric and Resonance FM team up, building “perfect” tools for alternative radio
Resonance FM is a London based alternative radio station run by a vital volunteer base. They provide radio to a wide range of practitioners of contemporary art in London and are the world's first art radio station. Alongside their radio programming their online program reaches over 1.5 million people a year.
In 2010 Resonance FM and Sourcefabric began a brainstorming session surrounding ways to create the "perfect" open source radio automation software. The result of two years work together is a web-based system called Airtime that Resonance FM uses for all their automated playout. "Normally Airtime runs all our automated programming, but for the Christmas period Airtime even ran the station 24 hours a day for three weeks," states Chris Weaver, the production manager at Resonance FM. "It went without a hitch, solid as a rock."
The two organizations continue to work closely together to discover new ways to expand the features of the software. Their successful partnership was also rewarded with the Best Technology for Social Change at the Guardian Digital Innovation Awards in March 2012.
